Organic Compost

100% Organic Compost

Plateau Compost receives greenwaste from councils and converts it  into organic compost by windrow composting over a period of 12 months.  This is much longer than a normal composting process.  The reason for this is that we have found that during the composting process the compost transitions from a bacteria dominated product to a fungal dominated compost which is much more beneficial for kiwifruit vines.

How does composting work?

Our organic compost is BioGro certified organic and is audited annually.  Please see below for certificates and testing.

Composting is the stabilized product of the decomposition of plant and animal residues at high temperatures (40–70 C) by the activity of thermophilic (heat-loving) microorganisms.  Compost is the product manufactured through the controlled aerobic, biological decomposition of biodegradable materials. The product has undergone mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures, which significantly reduces the viability of pathogens and weed seeds and stabilizes the carbon such that it is beneficial to plant growth.

Why is compost useful?

Compost is typically used as a soil amendment but may also contribute plant nutrient. Finished compost is typically screened to reduce its particle size, to improve soil incorporation. Plateau compost has started using reject kiwifruit in it’s composting process.  This adds extra potassium to the compost.  Aside from being an environmentally sustainable method of re-using waste fruit it also adds nutrients to the compost making it a better product.
