Blend Vermicast & Compost

Blending Compost with Vermicast
Composting processes, both traditional and vermicomposting, can reduce the number of human and plant pathogens present in many types of organic residues before they are applied to agricultural soils.
The complex microbial communities in high-quality cured compost have the ability to increase plant growth and decrease the incidence of plant disease, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
What is Vermicast?
The vermicast used in Plateau Composts' Vermicast Blend is supplied by Ecocast ltd. They produce vermicast by processing municipal waste from Whakatane, Rotorua and Tauranga, using a completely natural method - worms.
What difference do worms make to compost?
Earthworm fecal pellets, or casts, are different from traditional compost in that they are covered with a mucus layer generated by the worms’ intestinal tract. This layer provides a readily available source of carbon for soil microbes and leads to a flush of microbial activity in freshly deposited casts. Polysaccharides of plant, bacterial, fungal origin have been shown to enhance soil aggregate stability.
